The Art of Travel Light

Traveling with so many luggage is not my type. I prefer the simple one: one backpack and a sort of daily backpack. The fewer the better. I realize the importance of flexibility and practicality. I'm a public transport person and almost not a taxi person (although taxi is also public transport, isn't it?). But for me, using MRT or bus or....walking are the best way to feel and see the real life in a those cities or countries. That's why, those two things: flexibility and practicality, do matter for me.

Packing things in a limit space is not easy. I need some tricks to pack clothes, toiletries, and other things that I need during traveling in a not-so-big backpack. T-shirts are rolled. Bring very little. Sandal or flip-flop is in backpack (not shoes!). Organize your staff in a smart way. If you bring jacket, wear it! Don't put the jacket in your backpack because, you know, the jacket is thick. It will consumes space.

Happy travel light!

Saigon vs pre wedding

Four days in Saigon and I saw three pre wedding photo session. Two sessions at Saigon post office and the other at Ho Chi Minh Museum.
So, I guess Saigon is one of the perfect place for pre wedding photo session.
When I asked the pre wedding photographer, he said that the old buildings of Saigon usually become the favorite place for pre wedding photo session. Post office and Ho Chi Minh Museum are the most favorite place.
But Saigon City Hall and Saigon Opera House are perfect for pre wedding too!

So, I guess the cities with their old buildings in good condition are the perfect place for pre wedding photo session.
Happy wedding day!!

One hour and half transit at Domodedovo

Transit in Moscow?? It sounds perfect. I never been to Moscow before. So, even in the airport at least I can say to my friends: I've been in Moscow before!
After 10 or 11 hrs flight from Singapore, my SQ stopped at Domodedovo for one and a half hours before flew again to Houston - my final destination.
And the story began...
The security check at this airport for transit passangers has become a nightmare. Showing our passport (and sometimes the boarding pass) became first procedure of security check. Then we entered the room to checked our stuff into detector. All gadgets were placed in a tray. We should took off our shoes. After that, we...once again showed our passport to security guard before we could enter the gate.
Sounds simple but...with a lot of passangers and the narrow space, it tooks almost one hour to complete all procedures. And sometimes the procedure itself can change. For example, the first procedure of transit security check in Singapore-houston route, I only showed the boarding past. But in Houston-Singapore route, I must show the passport too. The other example is, after the security check and before enter the gate, in Singapore-Houstoun route we have to show our bags - once again - to security guard. But it didn't happen in my Houston-Singapore route.

So, my one and half hour at Domodedovo was really really exhausting! Can't do window shopping there because all we did: queing, security check in, queing, and fly to the next destination.

Absolutely not a good transit experience!!!

Heaven on Earth during Traveling

When I travel and visit the new world -the new place I've never seen before- I always doing one thing. I try to find my 'heaven on earth'.
What is 'heaven on earth'??
Heaven on earth is a place that really amazed me, and having a deep connection with me, no matter if it is just a little praire, or the roof-top at a building, or that place is an unfamous place...I just don't care!! As long as I feel like I was in 'heaven' because its beautiful...so I will call grant it as my 'heaven on earth'.
In Singapore, sitting at boat quay until the sun is down is my heaven on earth.
In North Celebes, sitting at the deck of the boat, seeing the ocean is my 'heaven on earth'.
In Scotland, driving through the mountains and hills and find some English Cattle is my 'heaven on earth'.
Even in Jogja, sitting at sidewalk while having soto as my breakfast is my 'heaven on earth'.

For me....that 'heaven on earth' is important. The connection that occurs between me and that places ot moments makes me miss them. That's why while I was traveling, I always thought that someday I will come to this place again. In the name of memories. In the name of my 'heaven on earth'.

One true thing, my 'heaven on earth' mostly are not a tourist destinaton....
So, if you wanna find your 'heaven on earth' while you are traveling somewhere, just open up your mind and your eyes. And you will find them...

my traveling me-time

This is the best moment while i was traveling somewhere.

Me, early in the morning. With a bowl of cereal as my breakfast, in front of hostel's pc, connecting to the world through cyber. It's early in the morning, and people who stay in my hostel still in their bed.

It's definitely my me-time in my travel time.

It reminds me a bit with my habit when I was at home.

My another me-time during my travel time is...when I go to bed at night, inside my blanket, and my ipod is playing my fave songs...and what i have to do is just lying and listening to my ipod and remembering about what I've done during my travel time..

I'm absolutely being anti-social person in the world!!"

So...my me-time is reallyimportant during my travel time. Because it can recharging me from all things that may bored me. And sleeping with stranger??? Yeepp!!! I feel like I'm loosing my privacy. So...who doesn't need me time during the travel time???

I need it.

And what about you??

Hyung Koo Kang...The Burning Gaze

Last week I went to Singapore for my short trip. On the way to Suntec Mall, I saw and advertising about Singapore Art Museum at Bras Basah. Just because I was so interest with the style of the museum's building, I decided to change my direction and took the circle line, and ready to go there!!!

The museum is in front of Bras Basah MRT station exit. After taking photo for awhile, then I entered the museum. The admission fee is cheap. $10S for multiple entry in a day. The lady at information desk told me that there is a painting exhibition, displaying the work of Hyung Koo Kang.
Don't know who he is..but the volunteer guide told me that I won't regret spending hours enjoying Hyung Koo Kang works.

The exhibition theme is The Burning Gaze. This exhibition will feature hyperrealist self-portraits, as well as paintings of well-known personalities such as Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, other celebrities and political figures.

Yeahh....I'm not a fan of painting. But when I saw Hyung Koo Kang's work, I thought it was the best painter in the world.  I like the saturated color that he usually use in his work but I really love the way he evokes our emotional response when we saw his work.Every face that he paint is so alive. The expression....they look like real. If we see the painting from a distance, it's just like a photo not a painting.

Corious with his work??? I show you some of his work below.

This exhibition is held till 25 December 2011...
Don't miss it!!!

My travel soulmate

Traveling with groups  sometimes makes me exhausted. I have to be very tolerant with my travelmates. Maybe there is someone who doesn't have the same interest, passion, or stamina with me. They don't love beach...but I do. They love shopping more than anything....I do love shopping but I love exploring the unique part of the country I've visited more than anything.
But, traveling alone is not my style too. Cause I have the spirit of narcism, so I need someone to take a picture of me. And I don't believe to strangers to take a picture of me. What if he or she steals my camera...??\

For me, traveling with my buddies - I usually called them my travel soulmates - is the best I can do. We have the same passion and interest and stamina.... okay..maybe not really the same... but.. traveling with them is so comfort.

Finding your best travel ates is not easy. Based on my experiences, three or four people in a group to travel together is enough. Just choose people who has at least same passion, same interests, same budget, and same stamina with you. You just don't want have a fight with your travelmate because of he or she wants to stay not in a hostel but your best option is staying in a hostel. Or maybe...they don't care if they have to eat in a food stall, but it would be your big problem if you eat there!!!

So...be wise on choosing your travelmate. And enjoy your trip!!!

Destination branding...is it really important for you??

As a traveler, I use the internet to decide what destination I should visit for my next trip. Seeing the pic of many destination, reading some travel blogs, then I'll pick one or two destinations.
Well...what about you? What makes you choose the destination for your trip? Is it enough...just to see the pic of destination or read some travel blogs??

What about with the destination brand? Malaysia Truly Asia? Uniquely Singapore? Taiwan-the heart of Asia?
Does it influence you on choosing the destination?

For me...yes...sometimes it influenced me. When I heard Incredible India, for example, I imagine that India contains incredible things to see, to do, to feel, and to buy. The cultures, the lifestyle, the people, the architecture, the landscape, the Bollywood, the cuisine... Everything in India is incredible.
The fact is, we know that India has many heritage sites, many festival and events, strong culture and the cuisine...with the unique taste...makes people fall in love with it.
So..the power of destination branding is strong. Brand can drive tourist to choose and visit a destination. The time we heard about the brand, the next second we will playing with our perception about the place based on its brand. Brand helps increasing the visitors to the destination.

Uhmm...just tell me!!! Does destination brand really matters to you???

Responsible Tourism

Tourism can have a negative impact for environment. Garbage, environmental damage... If we are not concern about this, then the tourism itself will be unable to sustain. Responsible tourism is a great idea to make the tourism sustain.

What is Responsible Tourism
According to Wikipedia responsible tourism is a tourism that creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit.
Responsible tourism aims are:
  • local-economic growth

Imagine this!! We travel to a new place. Meet new people. Meet the local. We admiring the architectures. The culture. The scenery. This beautiful place is somebody's home. So...just thinking..if this beautiful place is your home..how would you want visitors to behave in your home?

How to be a responsible tourist
Become responsible tourist is the important thing to do. It keeps the tourism sustain. So, as a traveler we should do:

Go green, always put the garbage into its place, don't damage the environment (even if just pick flowers), don't make any vandalism.
Support the local business, buy the souvenirs or food from local shops.
Respect the local culture, you must obey the local regulations even if you think that the cultures or the rules are ridiculous for you
